Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location

• Franklin, Indiana

Assignment Length

• 13 weeks

Setting

• Mid-size hospital
• 34-bed unit

Schedule

• 12-hour day and night shifts
• Self-scheduling may be available depending on census and staffing
• Weekend rotation required; currently 4 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
• Holiday rotation based on calendar
• If cancelled, may be placed on call with a 45-minute return time after notification

Required Qualifications

• Active RN license
• BLS certification
• NIHSS certification
• Experience in MedSurg, PCU, Telemetry, or CCU

Unit Details

• Common patient types include pneumonia, COPD, CHF, orthopedic cases, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, diverticulitis, bowel resection, and pancreatitis
• Heparin is the common titratable medication used per protocol
• Remote telemetry monitoring is used; MedSurg nurses are not responsible for strip interpretation
• Chronic BiPAP and CPAP equipment are used on the unit
• Floating is within MedSurg scope of practice

Staffing and Ratios

• Day shift ratio: 1:5
• Night shift ratio: 1:6
• PCT support is available on both day and night shifts, with a maximum ratio of 1:12
• Charge nurse is available on both shifts
• House supervisor is available at night

Orientation

• 1 shift of clinical nursing education
• 2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor

Dress Code

• Navy blue scrubs
