Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Operating Room (OR) - Contract
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to patients in the Operating Room setting, applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans while ensuring a positive patient experience and maintaining quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
- Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, and Discharge Wrap Up.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
- Implement process improvement strategies and participate in peer/institutional reviews.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice, and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Escalate safety hazards according to protocol.
- Document nursing practice to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
- Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
- Promote lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
- Acquire knowledge relevant to role, specialty, and community health needs.
- Participate in shared decision-making through councils and committees.
Qualifications
- Current New York State RN License required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- NBSTA certification for CST, NA, Heartsaver preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of medical operating room experience.
- Minimum 2 years RN experience.
- EPIC experience highly preferred.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation.
- Travel experience of 1 year required for travel positions (not required for per diem).
Work Environment & Schedule
- Average unit census: 50 cases per day.
- Unit has 19 beds.
- Staffing ratio: 1:1.
- Varying schedule including weekends on a rotational basis, on-call duties, and holiday volunteer shifts.
