Description

Pediatric Step Down RN - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Staffing - Supplier Sourced
Contract Length: 13 weeks (89 days ≈ 13 weeks)


Job Summary

  • Deliver patient care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process using theory, research, and evidence-based practice.
  • Assess and evaluate patient care needs, applying critical thinking in management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, transitions, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model and allocate resources effectively.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care through admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and collaboration with MD/RN.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate concerns as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
  • Support staff use of evidence-based practices to improve patient care.
  • Conduct Purposeful Hourly Rounding addressing key patient needs (the 4 Ps).

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers and improvement opportunities.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge essential to quality and safety for pediatric step down patients.
  • Implement process improvement strategies based on institutional and evidence-based standards.
  • Participate in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Contribute to compliance with quality and safety measures.
  • Apply high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure patient safety.
  • Escalate safety hazards or practice gaps following institutional protocols.
  • Utilize electronic documentation systems to support quality and performance improvement.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Current New York State RN license.
  • Relevant pediatric nursing experience required.
  • New graduates must have current knowledge of nursing process and application.
  • PALS, BLS, and ACLS certifications required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, effective communication, teamwork, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).
  • Physical ability to care for acutely ill patients including walking, standing, lifting, stooping, pushing, and quick response.
  • Manual dexterity for clinical procedures such as venipuncture, urinary catheterization, and CPR.
  • Ability to use electronic medical records and data entry systems proficiently.
  • Physical and mental health to manage a broad variety of pediatric diagnoses and behaviors daily.
