Job Opportunity: CDI Specialist I (Remote - Clinical)

Location: Remote (within the U.S.)
State: Minnesota
City: Rochester

Job Description

  • Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (ICDI) Specialist role focused on inpatient CDI reviews with productivity expectations
  • Responsibilities include reconciliation with Coding, MS-DRG assignment, risk-adjustment documentation (CMS, HCC, Vizient, etc.)
  • Review patient medical records (inpatient and/or outpatient) to ensure accurate representation of severity of illness and proper coding
  • Validate that coding reflects medical necessity and facilitates accurate reporting of patient illness severity, risk of mortality, and complexity of care
  • Identify documentation gaps using advanced knowledge of disease processes, medications, and critical thinking
  • Collaborate extensively with physicians, coding, case management, nursing, and other caregivers to improve documentation quality
  • Serve as an educator and resource to physicians and allied health staff to enhance clinical documentation completeness
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, official coding rules, and accepted standards of coding practice
  • Must provide own equipment

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (ICDIS), including concurrent review of medical records and production role experience within the last 12 months
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to present ideas clearly to physicians, management, and healthcare team members
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently without close supervision
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative, creative, and challenging environment
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including possible evenings and weekends as needed

Education & Certifications

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • One of the following credentials required:
    • Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) OR
    • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS)
  • And one of the following:
    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
    • Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Registered Respiratory Therapist
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
    • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P)
    • International or Domestic Medical Degree

  • This is a 100% remote position, allowing work from anywhere in the U.S.
  • The role requires adherence to ethical and legal business procedures and compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
