Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality care to patients in the Labor & Delivery Unit. Deliver nursing care based on theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
• Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
• Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
• Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
• Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
• Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
• Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

• Facilitate admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
• Use evidence-based practices to improve patient care perceptions.
• Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
• Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

• Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
• Implement process improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Participate in peer and institutional review processes.

• Escalate safety hazards per institutional protocols.

Operations

• Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
• Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
• Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
• Practice cost-effective patient care resource management.
• Document thoroughly in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.
• Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Requirements

• Licensure: NYS Registered Nurse (RN) License required
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP required
• Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience
  • Minimum 2 years Labor & Delivery experience (higher value used)
• Travel Experience: 1 year travel experience required for travel positions; not required for per diem
• Preferred: EPIC electronic health record experience

Unit Details

• Average Unit Census: 12 patients
• Unit Beds: 18
• Staffing Guidelines: 1-2 nurses per shift
• Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each

Contract Length

• Approximately 13 weeks (89 days rounded to 13 weeks)
