Job Opportunity: IMC - Nurse Manager, Emergency Department
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Job Summary
The Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. This role includes oversight and direction of the emergency department, accountability for planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within the department. The Nurse Manager fosters collaboration and respect among healthcare team members and provides weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Performance
- Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage.
- Monitor unit operational performance metrics including agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
- Oversee daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of department employees.
- Lead ongoing quality and performance improvement processes related to the emergency department.
- Promote a collaborative team approach in care for ED and trauma patients.
- Support and interpret hospital policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Monitor customer satisfaction scores and implement improvement plans.
- Track patient volume, quality of care, and staff performance to identify improvement areas.
- Maintain a departmental dashboard covering people, service, quality, and leadership metrics.
- Investigate and resolve patient, physician, and staff complaints or concerns.
- Ensure required competencies for self and all employees are maintained.
- Participate in professional organizations.
Clinical Practice / Patient Care
- Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance.
- Keep nursing staff informed of protocols affecting the patient population.
- Maintain a safe and caring environment conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance.
- Ensure equal access to treatment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
Management
- Participate in overall service planning.
- Conduct monthly staff meetings to address equipment, scheduling, goals, performance metrics, and staff concerns.
Human Resource Development / Management
- Educate and evaluate staff performance.
- Work with nursing leadership and HR to counsel, discipline, and terminate staff as needed.
- Educate staff on new and existing department procedures and systems.
- Foster an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years nursing experience in management and/or supervisory roles within the Emergency Department.
Education
- Master’s Degree in Nursing.
Certifications & Licensure
- Current Registered Professional Nurse license in New York State.
- BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
Skills
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication in English.
- Creative problem-solving skills to improve existing programs.
- Ability to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- Professional handling of difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others.
Preferred Qualifications
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification (preferred but not required).
