Description

Registered Nurse - Oncology (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to oncology patients based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care using critical thinking and evidence-based practices.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs and integrate appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop and update care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and families about care transitions and health maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care teams.
  • Manage assignments within a modified primary nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Foster therapeutic relationships with patients and families, respecting cultural diversity and individual preferences.
  • Implement relationship-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful rounding, and medication reviews.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to maintain a safe environment and escalate safety concerns appropriately.
  • Document nursing care accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and staffing needs with nursing leadership.
  • Promote cost-effective use of resources.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support a positive environment for clinical colleagues and patients.
  • Pursue ongoing clinical competence and professional growth.
  • Demonstrate ethical decision-making and professional communication.
  • Engage in lifelong learning and participate in nursing committees and councils.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Minimum 2 years of oncology nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience in an outpatient oncology setting

Work Schedule & Unit Details

  • 36 beds per unit
  • Average unit census approximately 35 patients
  • Typical schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each
