Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (Contract)
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Job Summary
As a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department, you will provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to patients and their families. Your role involves applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practices to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using a relationship-centered approach and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Facilitate patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication reviews, and discharge wrap-ups.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate when necessary.
- Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in emergency nursing.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure patient safety.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management to support patient care.
- Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
- Promote cost-effective patient care practices.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.
Professional Development
- Support a positive environment for clinical colleagues, patients, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
- Demonstrate professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective communication.
- Encourage lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
- Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience working with adult and pediatric patients in the ED setting
- Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- For travel positions: minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience
Work Schedule & Unit Details
- Unit size: 16 beds
- Average unit census: 20-50 patients
- Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (including holidays and weekends)
Contract Length
- Approximately 13 weeks (89 days)
