Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (Contract)

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Job Summary

As a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department, you will provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to patients and their families. Your role involves applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practices to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Deliver patient care using a relationship-centered approach and nursing process.
• Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans.
• Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
• Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

• Facilitate patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication reviews, and discharge wrap-ups.
• Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
• Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
• Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate when necessary.
• Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.

Quality and Safety

• Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in emergency nursing.
• Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
• Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure patient safety.
• Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.

Operations

• Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
• Coordinate supply and inventory management to support patient care.
• Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
• Promote cost-effective patient care practices.
• Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
• Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Experience working with adult and pediatric patients in the ED setting
• Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• For travel positions: minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience

Work Schedule & Unit Details

• Unit size: 16 beds
• Average unit census: 20-50 patients
• Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (including holidays and weekends)

Contract Length

• Approximately 13 weeks (89 days)
