Description
Registered Nurse - Surgical Specialty
Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Employment Type: Registered Nurse, Direct Care
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide nursing care on a medical/surgical unit specializing in acute care surgical patients. Care for inpatients pre- or post-surgery, including patients with new drains, wounds, tracheostomies, ostomies, nasogastric tubes, or double lumen hemodialysis catheters. Some patients may require stepdown/PCU level care.
Responsibilities
- Manage an assigned group of patients, documenting responses to nursing interventions and physician orders.
- Assist physicians with patient examinations and minor diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor physiological data and intervene as necessary.
- Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products.
- Communicate care plans with patients and families, including at discharge.
- Delegate tasks to support staff and make referrals for patient care needs.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year.
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
- Experience caring for patients with new drains, tracheostomies, and double lumen hemodialysis catheters (DHT).
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
Licensure & Certifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oklahoma.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Skills
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues.
Patient Ratios
- Surgical patients: 5:1 ratio
- Stepdown area patients: 3:1 ratio
