Description

Nurse Manager, Emergency Department

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Employment Type: Staffing - Supplier Sourced
Shift: Evening (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM)
Contract Length: Approximately 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Assume 24-hour responsibility for overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in the Emergency Department (ED).
  • Oversee and direct the ED nursing staff, including planning, leading, and evaluating nursing care.
  • Foster a collaborative and respectful environment among healthcare team members.
  • Provide weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Performance

  • Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage.
  • Monitor unit operational performance metrics such as agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
  • Oversee daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of ED employees.
  • Lead ongoing quality and performance improvement processes.
  • Promote a collaborative team approach in caring for ED and trauma patients.
  • Support and interpret hospital policies and procedures.
  • Monitor patient volume, quality of care, and staff performance to identify improvement areas.
  • Maintain a departmental dashboard tracking people, service, quality, and leadership metrics.
  • Investigate and resolve patient, physician, and staff complaints or concerns.
  • Ensure required competencies are maintained for self and staff.
  • Participate in professional organizations.

Clinical Practice / Patient Care

  • Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance.
  • Keep nursing staff informed of relevant protocols affecting the patient population.
  • Maintain a safe, caring environment conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance.
  • Ensure equal access to treatment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.

Management

  • Participate in overall service planning.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings to address equipment, scheduling, goals, performance metrics, and staff concerns.

Human Resource Development / Management

  • Educate and evaluate staff performance.
  • Work with nursing leadership and HR to counsel, discipline, or terminate staff as needed.
  • Train staff on new and existing department procedures and systems.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience in management and/or supervisory roles within the Emergency Department.
  • Master’s degree completed or in hand.
  • At least 1 year of experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in English, both verbal and written communication.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to determine appropriate actions in complex situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize work effectively.
  • Professional handling of difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others.

Additional Information

  • This is an exempt position with no overtime.
  • Prior Emergency Department experience is mandatory.
