Nurse Manager, Emergency Department

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Evening (3:00 PM – 11:00 PM)
Hours: 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week

Job Summary

• Full accountability for 24-hour overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in the Emergency Department (ED).
• Oversight and direction of ED nursing care, including staffing, workflow, orientation, training, and development of employees.
• Foster a collaborative and respectful environment among healthcare team members.
• Weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
• Responsible for quality and performance improvement processes related to the ED.
• Monitor patient volume, quality of care, staff performance, and customer satisfaction scores; implement improvement plans.
• Investigate and resolve patient, physician, and staff complaints or concerns.
• Maintain departmental dashboards tracking people, service, quality, and leadership metrics.
• Participate in professional organizations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Performance

• Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage.
• Monitor operational performance metrics including agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
• Support and interpret hospital policies, procedures, and objectives.

Clinical Practice / Patient Care

• Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish care standards and evaluate staff compliance.
• Keep nursing staff informed of relevant protocols affecting the patient population.
• Maintain a safe, caring environment conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance.
• Ensure equal access to treatment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.

Management

• Participate in overall service planning.
• Conduct monthly staff meetings addressing equipment, scheduling, goals, performance metrics, and concerns.

Human Resource Development / Management

• Educate and evaluate staff performance.
• Work with leadership and HR to counsel, discipline, or terminate staff as needed.
• Educate staff on new and existing department procedures and systems.
• Promote an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
• Master of Science in Nursing.
• Minimum of 5 years of Emergency Department nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
• Experience in nursing management roles.
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
• Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

• Exempt position with no overtime.
