Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - SICU/MICU - Contract
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 14 weeks
Shift: Night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), every other weekend
Hours: Approximately 11 hours per day, 34.5 hours per week
Unit Details:
- 24 beds, average census 17
- Staffing ratio 1:2
- Unit type: Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) / Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to critically ill patients in the SICU/MICU setting. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice while collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking and nursing process.
- Deliver care incorporating Relationship Centered Care principles.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Facilitate admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
- Establish therapeutic relationships respecting patient values, preferences, and cultural diversity.
- Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
- Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality improvement.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.
- Document nursing care accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and staffing needs with nursing leadership.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Ensure cost-effective use of resources.

- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence and nursing expertise.
- Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
- Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
- Participate in shared decision-making through committees and unit initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience for travel positions (not required for Per Diem positions)
- Medical-Surgical nursing experience
Additional Information
- Schedule includes night shifts with every other weekend required.
