Pathology Assistant

Location: Edison, New Jersey

Job Summary

• Assist pathologists with surgical specimens and related duties.
• Prepare and dissect surgical tissue sections for microscopic examination, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and other studies.
• Perform photography and gross description of surgical specimens.
• Ensure accuracy of patient information and gross descriptions.
• Prepare tissue sections for intraoperative consultations (frozen section), including embedding, cutting on a cryostat, and staining slides.
• Procure fresh tissue samples for biorepository banking, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and snap freezing for therapeutic and research purposes.
• Use Faxitron to obtain x-ray images and send to PACS system.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and cleanliness for gross anatomic dissection.
• Assist in preparing materials for teaching exercises.
• Perform computer system functions for timely reporting of results.
• Assist with post-mortem examinations as directed, including photography, external examination, evisceration, dissection, and data recording.
• Lift a minimum of 30 lbs and stand for at least 5 hours daily.
• Adhere to yearly competency assessments and organizational standards.
• Work schedule is primarily 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday (5x8s), with occasional evening hours; no weekends, holidays, or on-call required.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant, including experience within the last year.
• ASCP certification.
• Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences or another biological discipline.

Skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.
• Professional attitude and strong work ethic.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.
• Ability to stand for a minimum of 5 hours per day.

Work Hours

• 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.
• Primarily daytime shift: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
• Must be open to occasional evening hours.
• No weekends, holidays, or on-call duties.
