Job Description

The Registered Ob/Gyn Sonographer performs clinical imaging duties specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine. The role involves conducting ultrasound examinations following AIUM and ACOG guidelines, ensuring quality patient care, accurate record keeping, and proper equipment handling. Work is performed under physician direction and clinical manager supervision.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform imaging and procedural duties for Obstetric/Gynecological ultrasound exams.
  • Follow established testing protocols and professional standards.
  • Produce quality study images and data using imaging and accessory equipment competently.
  • Prepare patients and assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures.
  • Assess patients’ physical, psychosocial, and educational needs; obtain relevant history before tests.
  • Verify appropriateness of supporting documentation for exams.
  • Maintain workflow efficiency and assist colleagues as needed.
  • Explain testing procedures to patients, families, and staff.
  • Adhere to code of conduct, including HIPAA compliance and “Fit for Duty” policies.
  • Maintain punctuality and proper attendance.
  • Follow safety protocols, maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaborate with leadership to optimize department resources and staffing.
  • Schedule add-on and emergency exams with good customer service.
  • Maintain proficiency with information systems, including structured reporting and image archival.
  • Ensure accurate and timely order entry and exam tracking in the HIS.
  • Follow infection control policies.
  • Communicate equipment maintenance needs and operate equipment safely.
  • Participate in peer review, process improvement activities, and department meetings.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory expectations.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience in high-risk or office-based OB/GYN ultrasound diagnostics and procedures.
  • Proficient in routine procedures and real-time techniques including M-mode, pulse and color Doppler.
  • Strong knowledge of fetal and cross-sectional anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform vital signs: pulse rate, blood pressure (automated/manual), respiration rate, oxygen saturation.
  • Ability to provide relevant technical information to interpreting physicians.
  • Familiarity with PACS and structured reporting systems.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills for positive interaction with staff, patients, and physicians.
