Registered Nurse - Medical-Surgical Unit (Contract)
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks (89 days ≈ 13 weeks)
Unit: 6W Medicine Unit
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients and their families, based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care and nursing process principles.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
- Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perception of care.
- Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
- Implement process improvement and evidence-based strategies.
- Participate in peer and institutional review processes.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Report safety hazards following institutional protocols.
- Document nursing practice to support quality and performance improvement.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
- Document accurately and thoroughly per regulatory and legal standards.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with empathy and respect.
- Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
- Promote lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.

Requirements
Licenses/Certifications:
- New York State RN License
- BLS Certification
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years RN experience
- Minimum 2 years Medical Unit experience
- Prior travel experience required (1 year travel experience for travel positions)
Preferred Skills:
- EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred
Additional Information
- Unit has 29 beds with an average census of 22 patients.
- Staffing ratio guideline: 1 nurse to 6 patients.
- Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each, weekends required.
