Job Summary

The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced-level respiratory care to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control cardiopulmonary system deficiencies or abnormalities under physician orders. Acts as a resource to CRT staff and may handle special clinical projects or assignments as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing procedures, including obtaining arterial gases.
• Oversee and troubleshoot respiratory equipment for optimal patient care.
• Initiate respiratory protocols and interventions based on assessments.
• Administer medications safely and evaluate their effects per protocol.
• Communicate patient progress to staff, physicians, and other departments.
• Maintain awareness of patients’ overall condition and make appropriate care recommendations.
• Educate patients and families on health promotion, wellness, and self-care techniques.
• Complete documentation accurately and monitor supplies and equipment status.
• Utilize time effectively to meet productivity standards, including during low census periods.
• Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
• Promote organizational mission, vision, and values; adhere to service behavior standards.
• May float to other departments within competency and qualifications.
• May be required to be on-call during scheduled shifts.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to see, read, and assess patient needs and equipment labels.
• Frequent verbal communication and ability to hear alarms and spoken information quickly and accurately, especially in emergencies.
• Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment precisely.
• Ability to lift, transfer, and assist patients, including bending and carrying supplies and equipment of varying weights, including heavy items.
• Ability to walk, transport patients, and move equipment such as gurneys and portable devices.
• Navigate crowded and busy environments with equipment and power cords.
• Ability to stand for extended periods.
