Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) - Contract

Location: New York, NY


Position Summary

The RN in the PACU provides safe, competent, quality nursing care based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. The role involves patient assessment, care planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient and family education, and ensuring quality and safety in patient care.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing model.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care activities such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge planning.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and professionally.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care.
  • Identify and escalate safety hazards or barriers to care.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.
  • Implement high reliability principles to maintain a safe environment.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and staffing needs with nursing leadership.
  • Document thoroughly in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective communication.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils and nursing committees.

Requirements

  • Licensure: New York State RN License required.
  • Certifications: BLS and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience.
    • Minimum 2 years post-op management and medicated drips experience.
    • Prior travel experience: Required for travel positions (1 year travel experience required); not required for Per Diem positions.
  • Skills: EPIC experience highly preferred.

Work Schedule & Unit Details

  • Unit census average: 6 patients.
  • Unit size: 6 beds.
  • Staffing ratio: 1:1 to 1:2.
  • Schedule: Combination of 4x10 and 5x8 shifts with on-call requirements.

Contract Length

  • 6 weeks (interpreted from contract_length value of 6).
