Description

Job Opportunity: RN - Psychiatric Emergency Department (Travel)

Location: New York, NY
Specialty: Psychiatric Nursing (RN - Psych ED)
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: Approximately 14 weeks (96 days ≈ 14 weeks)
Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each


Job Summary

Registered Nurse providing safe, competent, quality psychiatric care to patients in the Emergency Department setting. Care is delivered based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care through admission welcome, bedside shift reports, purposeful rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and collaboration with physicians.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure a safe environment.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care approaches.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective communication.
  • Encourage lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Current New York State RN License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience
  • Minimum 2 years of psychiatric nursing experience
  • Prior travel experience required (at least 1 year travel experience for travel positions)
  • EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred
