Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Distribution (SPD) Technician is responsible for decontaminating, disassembling, cleaning, reassembling, packaging, and sterilizing instrumentation for surgical cases, clinics, and nursing units. Ensures equipment and instrumentation processing meets AAMI and Infection Control standards. Provides disposable and reusable equipment to the Operating Room and dispenses disposable supplies used in OR cases.
Job Responsibilities
- Re-assemble and package instrument sets accurately and efficiently according to department policies and manufacturer instructions.
- Perform manual and mechanical cleaning of reusable instruments and equipment.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, defects, and proper functionality.
- Use electronic equipment to inspect electrosurgical instruments and cables for defects.
- Restock Specialty Carts and Omnicells as needed.
- Document completed work and verify processing parameters within the SPD Information system.
- Sterilize instrument sets following departmental policies and manufacturer instructions.
- Pick supplies for same day/next day surgical cases.
- Respond to telephone calls from internal and external customers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in sterile processing, including 2 years of travel experience.
- Level 1 trauma experience and/or 50+ case days.
- Experience with trays, decontamination, and sterilization.
- Familiarity with instrumentation and workflows in Orthopaedics, Robotics, Laparoscopic, Neurosurgery, ENT, Cardiovascular, General Surgery, Trauma, Plastics, Urology, and Gynecology.
- Basic computer skills and understanding of basic medical terminology.
- Ability to perform detail-oriented repetitive work for long periods.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent STAT and ASAP requests.
- Strong critical thinking skills and ability to work independently.
- Certification required: CRCST or CSPDT.
- High School diploma or GED required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Borescope, OneSource, and SPM systems is preferred.
