Registered Nurse, Obstetrics (Contract)
Location: Gardner, Massachusetts
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 36 hours per week, varies, with potential for every third weekend
Job Summary
Provide comprehensive nursing care to obstetrics patients including labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care. Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care. Support patient and family education, ensure safety, and promote positive patient outcomes.
Essential Functions
- Assess and reassess patients; develop and implement nursing care plans and patient goals.
- Provide care based on standards, protocols, and policies, respecting patient dignity.
- Teach patients and families according to their learning needs and readiness.
- Prepare patients and families for discharge, coordinating support systems and resources.
- Delegate and supervise nursing interventions appropriately.
- Prioritize patient care and seek assistance or reassign personnel as needed.
- Document all patient data, interventions, and responses accurately and timely.
- Report patient status to healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Promote professional development and serve as a preceptor or trainer.
- Identify and report patient safety risks and medical errors.
- Address ethical issues in patient care.
- Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy per orders and protocols.
- Assess and manage patient pain levels, documenting responses and notifying physicians as needed.
- Provide specialized care for postpartum and gynecological patients, recognizing complications and collaborating with physicians.
- Educate new mothers and families on newborn care and available resources.
- Perform assessments related to labor, delivery, and recovery; identify deviations and intervene appropriately.
- Utilize and interpret fetal monitoring equipment (external and internal) and initiate nursing interventions.
- Assist in stabilizing high-risk patients and accompany transfers to higher-level care centers.
- Administer labor and delivery medications safely and competently.
- Perform labor-related procedures including labor checks, inductions, augmentations, NSTs, external cephalic versions, and epidurals.
- Provide care and support for patients experiencing fetal demise according to protocol.
- Conduct thorough newborn assessments and recognize deviations from normal adaptation.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation and assist physicians as needed.
- Identify newborn problems and assist in stabilization of critical newborns.
- Support mothers in infant feeding methods and teach appropriate feeding techniques.
- Use various teaching methods (discussions, videos, handouts, classes) to individualize newborn care education.
- Manage infants with difficulty adjusting to extrauterine life, including phototherapy and CPAP administration.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medication administration based on patient age and condition.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with recent experience within the last year
- Medical-Surgical nursing experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- AWHONN certification (including Introduction to Fetal Monitoring and Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring)
