Registered Nurse (RN) - Operating Room (OR)

Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Facility Overview

  • Acute care facility with 815 beds
  • Regional referral center for tertiary and quaternary care
  • Only Level II trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and children's hospital in western NC
  • Offers specialties including cardiovascular, orthopedics, neurosciences, oncology, pediatrics, women's services, and behavioral health
  • Second busiest surgical hospital in North Carolina
  • Pediatric unit includes a 51-bed Level III Neonatal ICU and 30 pediatric subspecialists
  • Recently expanded with a new patient tower featuring a new Emergency Department, interventional procedural rooms, operating rooms, and 220 private patient rooms
  • Known for a friendly atmosphere, supportive management, and growth opportunities
  • Located in a city with a vibrant arts community, natural beauty, museums, restaurants, and historical sites

Unit Information

  • Unit: Asheville Surgery Center
  • Staff: 88 total
  • Shift Type: Day shift
  • Patient Ratios: 1:1 in OR; Perianesthesia ratios vary by acuity
  • Equipment: Stryker, Steris, Smith & Nephew
  • EMR System: Cerner Surginet
  • Case Types:
    • Ophthalmology (e.g., cataracts, retina procedures)
    • Orthopedics/Sports Medicine (knee, shoulder arthroscopy, hand/foot/ankle procedures)
    • Gynecology/Urology (hysteroscopy, D&C, cystoscopy, prostate biopsy)
    • Plastics (breast reconstruction, cosmetic procedures)
    • General surgery (gallbladder, hernia)
    • Pediatrics (dental, orthopedic, general)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, including within the last year
  • Experience in Ophthalmology, OB/GYN, Urology, Pediatrics, and Orthopedics
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • More than 1 year of ambulatory surgery experience
  • CNOR certification

Work Environment & Culture

  • Close-knit, family-oriented, friendly, and engaged team
  • Dress code: Scrubs provided (green)
  • Floating areas include Main Operating Room (MOR), Vascular Operating Room (VOR), and Endoscopy at main campus
  • Weekend/on-call: Late call 2 times per week with backup coverage

Schedule & Hours

  • Typical shift: 10:45 AM – 9:15 PM
  • Approximately 36 hours per week

Additional Notes

  • Candidates without at least 1 year of surgical experience matching the case mix will not be considered
  • Unit policies align with those of the Main Operating Room (MOR)
