Description
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing respiratory care services to patients across various care settings, including critical care, emergency, and inpatient units. This role performs diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory procedures in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols, and regulatory standards. The Respiratory Therapist collaborates with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to support optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Administer respiratory therapy treatments including oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and airway management.
Perform patient assessments and monitor respiratory status, adjusting treatment plans as needed.
Operate and maintain ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and other respiratory care equipment.
Assist with intubation procedures and manage mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients.
Perform diagnostic testing such as arterial blood gases (ABGs), pulmonary function testing, and oximetry monitoring.
Provide respiratory care in critical care units, emergency departments, and inpatient units.
Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, therapies, and home care equipment when applicable.
Document patient care and treatment outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with healthcare teams to develop patient care plans.
Maintain compliance with hospital policies, infection control protocols, and state and federal regulations.
Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential.
Active Pennsylvania Respiratory Care License or eligibility for licensure.
Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
Previous hospital or acute care experience preferred, particularly in ICU or emergency settings.
