Named after a simple pine flagpole, Flagstaff is full of excitement and opportunity and a popular tourist destination best known as the gateway to the San Francisco Peaks mountain range and the Grand Canyon, an iconic national monument. The Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest national parks are less than two hours away, offering easy day trips. Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon are also major draws less than an hour away. The Arizona Snowbowl is a popular ski destination in the winter, and Walnut Canyon National Monument allows visitors to explore 700-year-old Sinagua cliff dwellings. Lowell Observatory offers a fantastic view of the stars and is where Clyde Tombaugh accidentally discovered Pluto in 1930. All these places are accessible via a slice of classic Americana, as the famous Route 66 runs right through the middle of town.
