Unit Information: This mixed-acuity unit has 15 beds. A minimum of 2 years of STAC Stepdown experience is required for traditional travelers, with a preference for candidates with 3 years of Stepdown experience and at least 6+ months of Level I or II Trauma experience. First-time travelers will not be accepted.

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: The unit cares for patients with trauma post-surgical needs, including MVA, elective surgeries, Whipples, cholecystectomies, GSW, blunt/penetrating traumas, assaults, ATV accidents, and amputations. Primary ortho injuries frequently include external fixation devices and pin site care requirements.

Required Licenses and Certifications: Candidates must have BLS and NIHSS certifications. Skills required include blood administration, skeletal traction, management of drains, JP and chest tubes, wound dressings, wound vac management, and trach care. Note that there is no drip titration on this unit; if titration is ordered, the patient will be transferred to ICU.

Support within the Department: The unit is supported by CNAs, a receptionist, a charge nurse who takes assignment, phlebotomy staff (dependent on staffing), a vascular access team, and resource teams for sepsis and rapid response. A shift coordinator, RT, hospitalists, specialists, and a unit educator are available 24/7, along with remote telemetry monitoring.

Scheduling: Weekend rotation is required every other weekend. There are no on-call duties, and holiday expectations are based on scheduled days from the facility. All requests for time off (RTO) should go through the manager, especially around holiday weeks.
