• Hours: 36 hours per week
• Shift: 12-hour night shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Patient Population: Adult critical care patients
• Typical Ratios: Approximately 1:1 to 1:2, with occasional higher-acuity assignments based on unit needs
• Charting: Epic
• Float Expectations: May float within the ICU and PCU scope, including other cardiovascular intensive care units

Cardiothoracic ICU Registered Nurse Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license eligible for practice in Connecticut
• At least 3 years of recent Cardiac ICU or Cardiothoracic ICU experience required
• At least 1 year of intensive care unit experience required
• Previous charge nurse experience required
• Previous experience caring for patients with a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
• Current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications required
• CCRN certification preferred
• Proficiency with pulmonary artery catheter and Swan-Ganz monitoring required
• Strong Epic electronic health record documentation experience
• Experience in a Level I trauma center preferred
• Ability to work night shifts, every other weekend, and within a flexible ICU float model

Cardiac ICU Nurse Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill adult patients following CABG, valve repair or replacement, aneurysm repair, transplant, VAD implantation, TAVR, and cardiac catheterization procedures
• Monitor and manage advanced hemodynamic parameters, including pulmonary artery pressures, cardiac output, CVP, and arterial-line data
• Care for patients requiring ventilator support, BiPAP/CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, continuous sedation, neuromuscular blockade, and vasoactive infusions
• Titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips according to patient condition and established protocols
• Manage specialized equipment and therapies, including IABP, Impella, CentriMag, and other ventricular assist devices
• Assess and manage dysrhythmias, epicardial pacing wires, chest tubes, central lines, PICC lines, and post-operative complications
• Interpret arterial blood gases, obtain 12-lead ECGs, administer blood products, and initiate emergency interventions as indicated
• Support procedures such as bronchoscopy and ECMO cannulation while maintaining rigorous infection-prevention and safety standards
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, and other interdisciplinary partners
• Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient responses in Epic
• Provide safe handoff communication and contribute to unit-based quality and patient-safety initiatives
