Travel Nurse Job Details

  • Unit: 19-bed Neuro ICU with an average daily census of 17 patients

  • Floating: ICU and PCU assignments within scope may be required

Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license eligible for practice in Connecticut; pending Connecticut licenses may be considered based on processing timelines
  • At least 2 years of recent Neuro ICU or neuroscience critical care experience
  • Previous travel nursing experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • Experience caring for patients with acute stroke, traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, neurotrauma, craniotomy, and craniectomy diagnoses
  • Experience with external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, ventilator management, and critical care drips
  • Level I Trauma Center experience preferred
  • Ability to complete required pre-start and annual learning modules
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination is required

Neuro ICU Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill adult and geriatric neuroscience patients.
  • Monitor and manage patients with acute stroke, neurotrauma, spinal cord injury, cerebral edema, respiratory failure, and multisystem organ dysfunction.
  • Assess and manage external ventricular drains, lumbar drains, ICP monitoring, arterial lines, central lines, and CVP monitoring.
  • Provide post-craniotomy and post-neurosurgical care, including frequent neurological assessments and recognition of clinical changes.
  • Manage ventilated patients, BiPAP/CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, suctioning, sedation, neuromuscular blockade, and vasoactive or cardiac infusions.
  • Interpret arterial blood gases and dysrhythmias and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
  • Administer emergency medications, blood products, IV insulin protocols, and other therapies according to established protocols.
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, social services, and rapid response teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes in Epic.
  • Float to ICU or PCU assignments within demonstrated competency and support unit needs.
