Join a high-acuity Level IV NICU as a travel nurse in Madison, Wisconsin, and make a meaningful impact caring for critically ill newborns and their families. This 13-week NICU travel assignment offers the opportunity to care for medically complex and surgical neonates in a collaborative pediatric academic medical environment with advanced respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, and surgical services. NICU Travel Nurse Job Details
- Position: Registered Nurse (RN) – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Assignment Type: 13-week Level IV NICU travel nursing contract
- Estimated Weekly Pay: $2,250–$2,370
- Start Date: November 9, 2026
- End Date: February 8, 2027
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week; 36 hours per week
- Shift Duration: 12-hour night shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
- Unit: 26-bed Level IV NICU with an average daily census of approximately 17 patients
- Weekend Coverage: Approximately 2–3 weekends per six-week scheduling period, or 4–6 weekend shifts during the contract, based on unit needs
- Float Requirement: Float as needed to pediatric units caring for patients younger than 12 months, including pediatric intensive care
- Work Setting: On-site
- Location: Madison, Wisconsin
- Local Candidate Policy: Candidates residing within 50 miles of the assignment location are not eligible
Level IV NICU Registered Nurse Requirements
- At least 2 years of total Level III or Level IV NICU experience, including at least 1 full year in a Level IV NICU
- At least 2 years of acute care experience in the submitted specialty within the last 3 years
- Current Registered Nurse license in Wisconsin or a compact RN license
- Current BLS and NRP certifications from the American Heart Association
- PALS certification preferred or as required by unit policy
- Previous travel nursing experience required
- Epic electronic health record (EHR) charting experience required
- Demonstrated experience caring for postoperative neonates, gastrostomy tubes, tracheostomies, and invasive and noninvasive ventilation
- Ability to care for premature infants and neonates with complex medical, surgical, cardiac, neurologic, metabolic, and genetic conditions
- Ability to pass a pre-assignment pediatric and adult telemetry examination. A passing score of at least 80% is required, with complete identification of specified lethal rhythms and no incorrect answers involving third-degree heart blocks.
- Required influenza vaccination, with medical or religious exemptions considered according to policy
NICU Travel Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive, developmentally appropriate neonatal nursing care for critically ill newborns from admission through discharge while supporting their families throughout the care continuum
- Care for neonates requiring advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services, including those born prematurely or diagnosed with congenital heart disease, neurologic disorders, seizures, brain injury, metabolic conditions, genetic disorders, or neonatal sepsis
- Care for postoperative patients following abdominal, genitourinary, head and neck, thoracic, cardiac, vascular, or musculoskeletal procedures
- Manage invasive and noninvasive respiratory support, including conventional ventilation, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, high-frequency ventilation, oscillator therapy, nitric oxide, and NAVA when indicated
- Perform and monitor neonatal nursing interventions such as central and peripheral line care, UAC/UVC management, enteral and gavage feedings, medication administration, phototherapy, thermoregulation, and therapeutic cooling
- Assess and manage tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, chest tubes, postoperative wounds, and other specialized equipment and procedures
- Recognize changes in cardiac rhythm and clinical status, initiate appropriate interventions, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team
- Provide patient and family education, breastfeeding support, developmental care, emotional support, and discharge preparation
- Collaborate with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, social services, rehabilitation, interpretation services, IV teams, and medical providers to promote safe, coordinated neonatal care
- Float to other pediatric units caring for infants younger than 12 months as assigned
