- Duration: 13 weeks
- Schedule: Three 12-hour shifts per week; rotating day and night availability
- Shift Duration: 12 hours
- Day Shift: 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
- Night Shift: 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
- Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: Approximately 4–6 weekend shifts during the assignment, based on unit needs
- Orientation: Approximately 24 hours; orientation shifts may vary and may include 8-hour shifts
- Unit: 26-bed Level IV NICU with an average daily census of approximately 17 patients
- Floating: Travelers may float as needed to pediatric units, including the PICU, caring for patients younger than 12 months
- Local Candidate Policy: Candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are not eligible
Level IV NICU Travel Nurse Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin or a compact RN license
- At least 2 years of recent acute-care NICU experience, including a minimum of 1 full year in a Level IV NICU
- Experience should be within the last 3 years and may combine Level III and Level IV NICU practice, provided the Level IV minimum is met
- Previous travel nursing experience required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications through the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred
- Recent experience with Epic electronic health records
- Demonstrated experience caring for post-operative neonates, patients with gastrostomy tubes, tracheostomies, and invasive or noninvasive ventilation
- Clinical familiarity with high-frequency ventilation, high-flow nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilators, nitric oxide, oscillators, umbilical lines, central lines, phototherapy, therapeutic hypothermia, and neonatal medication administration
- Ability to successfully complete required pediatric and adult cardiac rhythm interpretation testing
- Strong communication, teamwork, adaptability, and commitment to patient- and family-centered care
NICU Registered Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill newborns and infants from admission through discharge
- Care for neonates with complex medical and surgical conditions, including prematurity, congenital heart disease, neurologic disorders, metabolic or genetic conditions, and post-operative needs
- Manage patients requiring invasive and noninvasive respiratory support, including conventional ventilation, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow therapy, NAVA, high-frequency ventilation, and oscillator therapy
- Monitor and manage central lines, arterial lines, UACs, UVCs, drains, feeding tubes, tracheostomies, and other specialized equipment
- Administer medications, blood products, antibiotics, vasopressors, surfactants, steroids, insulin, and other therapies according to neonatal protocols
- Support specialized treatments and procedures such as therapeutic hypothermia, phototherapy, seizure monitoring, cardiac catheterization recovery, and post-abdominal or cardiac surgery care
- Assess patient status, recognize changes in condition, and collaborate with providers and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care
- Promote developmental care, thermoregulation, safe feeding, breastfeeding support, and family education
- Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in Epic
- Float to appropriate pediatric units when needed and provide safe, age-specific care for infants younger than 12 months
