NICU RN Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse license eligible for practice in Texas
  • At least 2 years of recent NICU nursing experience; 3 years of experience preferred
  • Previous travel nursing experience required
  • Recent Level III NICU experience caring for high-risk neonates required
  • Current BLS, NRP, and STABLE certifications required
  • PALS certification preferred
  • Prior electronic health record experience required; Cerner experience preferred
  • Strong clinical judgment, neonatal assessment skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative healthcare environment
  • Ability to provide required time-off requests with submission and meet assignment compliance deadlines
  • Flu vaccination required; approved medical or religious exemptions and declinations may be permitted

NICU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive neonatal nursing care to infants born at approximately 29–34 weeks’ gestation and those 34 weeks and older
  • Care for patients experiencing respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, meconium aspiration, necrotizing enterocolitis, neonatal abstinence syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia, and other complex conditions
  • Manage ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, nitric oxide, oxygen delivery systems, and therapeutic hypothermia equipment
  • Administer medications, blood products, IV vasopressors, surfactants, steroids, antibiotics, antivirals, and other neonatal therapies
  • Perform neonatal assessments, APGAR scoring, blood glucose monitoring, phlebotomy, IV placement, and dosage calculations
  • Provide care and monitoring for arterial lines, umbilical arterial and venous catheters, central lines, implanted lines, and chest tubes
  • Support high-risk deliveries and collaborate with providers and respiratory services during neonatal stabilization
  • Perform and document feedings, gavage care, breast milk handling, thermoregulation, developmental care, phototherapy, and isolation precautions
  • Educate and support parents and families regarding neonatal care, feeding, treatment plans, and discharge preparation
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record and communicate changes in patient condition promptly
  • Float to pediatric and nursery areas as needed while maintaining safe, compassionate patient care
