Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist provides essential surgical support before, during, and after operative procedures. The role is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile field, assisting the surgical team, and ensuring that instruments and supplies are available and properly handled throughout the procedure.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room for scheduled surgical procedures.
• Set up sterile instruments, equipment, supplies, sutures, and medications according to the procedure.
• Maintain strict sterile and aseptic technique throughout the surgical procedure.
• Assist surgeons and other members of the surgical team during operative and invasive procedures.
• Pass instruments, sutures, and other supplies to the surgeon as needed.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs based on the procedure and surgeon preferences.
• Perform surgical counts of instruments, needles, sponges, and other items in collaboration with the circulating RN.
• Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and sterile draping.
• Handle and properly label specimens according to facility policies.
• Assist with surgical site preparation and application of dressings.
• Maintain an organized and sterile back table and Mayo stand.
• Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are available, functional, and properly prepared.
• Identify and report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment.
• Assist with room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures.
• Maintain infection prevention and control standards in accordance with facility and AORN guidelines.
• Assist during routine, complex, and emergency surgical procedures.
• Anticipate and prepare for changes in surgical procedures, including laparoscopic-to-open conversions and unexpected complications.
• Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and safety throughout the surgical process.
• Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia staff, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Follow hospital policies, procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in orientation, training, and mentoring of new surgical technologists or students when required.
• May be required to participate in on-call, weekend, and holiday coverage based on department needs.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
• Minimum 2 year of recent OR/Surgical Technologist experience.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced operating room environment.
• Strong knowledge of sterile technique, surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to anticipate surgical team needs and demonstrate strong attention to detail.

Required Certifications

• BLS – American Heart Association (AHA)
• CST – NBSTSA preferred/required based on facility requirements.
