Job Summary
The Sleep Technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT), diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and patient care. The technologist provides sleep-related education and support to patients and families and may provide general oversight of other sleep center staff.
The Sleep Technologist must be credentialed in sleep technology as an RPSGT or RST.
Job Responsibilities
- Document patient arrival, interactions, consent, and testing procedures.
- Review and verify departmental orders, insurance, and prior authorization requirements.
- Review patient history and supporting documentation to establish medical necessity.
- Obtain additional information from patients or ordering providers when needed.
- Perform routine PAP interface fitting, desensitization, and patient education.
- Prepare patients for testing according to department policies and select appropriate equipment.
- Document routine observations throughout testing.
- Correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate accurate scoring and interpretation.
- Perform equipment and physiologic calibrations to ensure high-quality, artifact-free recordings.
- Monitor data quality throughout testing.
- Perform equipment cleaning and disinfection according to infection-control policies.
- Implement appropriate patient-safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions.
- Complete “Lights On” procedures to verify data integrity and ensure all documentation is complete.
- Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events, including:
- Respiratory events
- Cardiac events
- Limb movements
- Arousals
- Other clinically relevant events
- Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
- Analyze complex situations and apply appropriate departmental policies and professional guidelines.
- Perform and follow protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT).
- Demonstrate proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events according to accepted professional guidelines.
- Perform ancillary testing, including oximetry, actigraphy, and Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT).
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care for all populations served by the Sleep Lab.
- Maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, families, providers, and internal staff.
- Assist with ordering and maintaining testing supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and orderliness of the Sleep Lab.
- Participate in quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
- 1+ year of experience in a Sleep Lab required.
- Experience with sleep/wake stage scoring and identification of clinical events.
- Proficiency with ancillary sleep testing such as:
- Oximetry
- Actigraphy
- Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)
- Knowledge of PAP equipment, fitting, desensitization, and patient education.
- Ability to perform and document sleep studies accurately.
- Strong communication and patient-care skills.
Education
Required:
- Associate Degree in Polysomnographic Technology OR
- Completion of a Certificate Program in Polysomnographic Technology.
Required Certifications & Licensure
Candidate must hold applicable sleep technology credentials, including:
- Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)
- Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT)
- American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)
- Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT)
- BLS – American Heart Association (AHA)
