Registered Nurse - NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Provide nursing care in a Level 3 or 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Patient population includes premature infants (as early as 22 weeks), surgical infants, and those with hypoxic injury
- Special procedures include Therapeutic Hypothermia, Nitric Oxide therapy, UAC/UVC lines, Broviac catheters, tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and ostomies
- Equipment used: Tecotherm, BCPAP, Ram NC, Alaris IV pumps, Med Fusion feeding pumps, Servo ventilators, HFOV, Baby Leo, Giraffe incubators
- Unit systems: Pyxis medication system, EPIC electronic health records, SBAR communication, 4P staffing model
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: Night shift, 12-hour shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours per week: 36 hours (3 shifts per week)
- Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:2 to 1:4
- Weekend requirement: 3 Fridays, 3 Saturdays, and 3 Sundays over a 6-week period
- No call requirement
- Float requirement includes Pediatrics, PICU, and nursery care for infants up to 12 months
- Self-scheduling based on unit needs
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Scrubs: Navy blue or white
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 3 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) experience, including experience within the last year
- Ventilator experience required
- Certifications:
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree relevant to nursing
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical roles)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal
- Hepatitis B: Titer or vaccination series; facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physical with TB questionnaire
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years for travel and acute care roles
Additional Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
- Flu exemption requests accepted with medical or religious documentation; approved exemptions require mask wearing on campus
- Badge photo required immediately after signing contract; must be passport style with specific guidelines (solid white background, facing forward, holding paper with name and phone number)
- Various facility-specific documents and orientation checklists must be completed prior to start
- Medication safety training and competency exams may be required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of start with a minimum passing score of 82% (specific to certain specialties; NICU not listed as required)
This position is ideal for experienced NICU nurses with strong ventilator skills seeking a 13-week travel contract on night shifts in a high-acuity neonatal intensive care setting.
