Job Opportunity: Coronary Care ICU (T4) Nurse

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Facility: St Josephs Hospital and Medical Center


Facility Overview

  • 607-bed tertiary care hospital
  • Nationally recognized for quality care, medical education, and research
  • Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
  • Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
  • Teaching hospital with nursing students

Unit Details

  • Unit: CTICU/CVICU
  • Beds: 24
  • Patient Ratios: 1:1 to 1:2 (high number of 1:1 assignments)
  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm)
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (4 total weekend shifts every 4 weeks)
  • Holidays: Work included in rotation (2 out of 4 major holidays)
  • Charge Nurse Role: Yes, no patient assignment
  • Nurse Aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (days and nights)
  • Telemetry: Phillips system, patient ratio 4:1 on tele units
  • Float Requirements: Float to other ICUs, all Tele units, and Westgate campus if requested (travelers float before permanent staff)
  • Orientation: 2 days floor-specific orientation

Patient Population & Care

  • High acuity cardiac surgery recovery patients
  • Common diagnoses/procedures:
    • Cardiac surgery recovery
    • Impella devices
    • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
    • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
    • Lung transplant
    • Thoracic surgery
    • ECMO
    • Esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy
    • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • High number of bedside procedures including bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, epidurals

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years CORE experience in specialty (ICU, CVICU preferred)
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Teaching hospital experience required
  • Previous travel experience required for ED or Neuro ICU
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required; CCRN preferred
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento region)
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes)
  • Must have strong IV skills (no dedicated IV team)
  • Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Cannot hold concurrent contracts with Dignity AZ
  • Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
  • No contract shorter than 13 weeks accepted

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
  • Day 1 includes pass/fail SIMs Lab focusing on sterile technique and competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care provided

Additional Notes

  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
  • Intensivist coverage during day, on-call at night
  • Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7, including transplant patient support
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • High acuity environment with frequent bedside procedures and complex patient care
