Neuro ICU Travel Nurse Opportunity - Phoenix, Arizona
Unit & Facility Overview
- Unit: Neuro ICU
- Unit Size: 32 beds
- Hospital Size: Large (450+ beds)
- Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma Center
- EMR System: Cerner
- Patient Ratios: 1:2 in Neuro ICU; 4:1 on Tele units when floated
- Charge Nurse: Yes (does not take patients)
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Floating: Required to float between all ICU floors and Tele units
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
- Common Diagnoses: Critical care patients with neuro diagnoses including craniotomies, brain tumor removals, ablations, brain biopsies, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
- Monitoring & Equipment:
- Phillips telemetry monitors
- Ventilators available
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7
Required Experience & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- 3-6 months previous travel experience required
- Neuro ICU experience required, including strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience
- EVD (External Ventricular Drain) experience required
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Previous travel experience in ED or Neuro ICU required
- Cerner EMR experience required for ED
- Must have passed Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
Contract Details
- Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (no contracts shorter than 13 weeks accepted)
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Must be off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within Dignity AZ system
Additional Requirements & Notes
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle if traveling as part of a travel team
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel assignments
- Pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation (study guide provided)
- SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Neuro ICU nurses only do Foley catheter insertion
- Strict sterile field maintenance expected
- Teaching hospital: travelers may have nursing students
- Must be able to float to Medical-Surgical Telemetry floors
- Work schedule includes 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks and 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's)
- Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and previous travel assignments who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
