ER RN Opportunity - Phoenix, Arizona
Facility Overview
- Located in Phoenix, AZ, a 607-bed tertiary care center with nationally recognized medical education and research.
- Specialty services include lung, liver, and kidney transplants.
- Affiliated with the Barrow Neuro Institute, the world’s #1 neuro institute.
- Teaching hospital with nursing students present.
- Trauma Level I facility.
Position Details
- Unit: Emergency Department (ED) / Trauma
- Unit size: Acute - 36 beds, Subacute - 54 beds, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
- Patient volume: Approximately 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 annually
- Common patient types: Trauma, burns, psych holds (30-40), pediatric patients transferred out, spinal cord injury cases
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
- Charge nurses: 2 per shift with light patient load or task assignments
- Nurse aides: 4 patient care technicians (sitters)
- Shifts available: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 11a-11p, 1p-1a
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (unit discretion)
- Floating: Within the ER and between 4 facilities (main campus, Westgate, and 2 freestanding ERs about 30 minutes apart)
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts on the floor plus unit-specific training
- Telemetry monitors: Phillips; ability to read strips required
- Ventilators managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
- RT coverage: 24/7
- Pharmacy: 24/7 with pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
- Hospitalists/Intensivists: Minimum 2 MDs on site, up to 8; midlevels and anesthesia also present
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience
- Level I Trauma experience required (minimum 1 year preferred; 8 months+ will be screened)
- Previous travel experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Cerner EMR experience required (must be noted on resume with recent usage)
- ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications required
- Preferred certifications: TNCC and ATCN (ENPC not accepted as PALS replacement)
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; max 2 attempts allowed
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (varies by unit)
- Must be competent in sterile technique and common nursing skills (lifts, restraints, wound care)
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle for travel teams
- Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other assignments
- Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- Contract length minimum: 13 weeks
Additional Notes
- Float policy allows mid-shift float between multiple campuses and freestanding ERs
- Psych holds average 30-40 patients
- 12-hour night shifts with 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period, including coverage for 2 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's)
- Strict onboarding deadlines; all documentation must be complete by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date or start will be delayed
This role is ideal for experienced ER nurses with trauma and travel experience who are comfortable working in a high-volume, teaching hospital environment with strict compliance and competency standards.
