Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring Nurse (6N) - Phoenix, Arizona

Job Overview

  • Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
  • Unit Size: 48 beds total, including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms
  • Hospital Size: 607 beds, nationally recognized tertiary care center
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma required
  • Specialty: Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
  • Schedule:
    • Weekend requirement: 3 shifts per 4 weeks (self-scheduling)
    • Holidays: Work included in holiday rotation based on unit needs
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
  • Charge Nurse: Yes, no patient assignment
  • Support Staff:
    • Resource RN (day and night)
    • Nurse Aides/PCTs (1-2 on days, 1 at night)
  • Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
  • Floating: Possible to Med Surg/Telemetry floors

Patient Population & Care

  • Common Diagnoses:
    • Epilepsy
    • Brain tumors
    • Subdural hematoma
    • Scoliosis surgeries
    • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
    • Various neuro diagnoses
  • Monitoring: 24-48 hour Trend EEGs
  • Telemetry: Mainly MedSurg with some Telemetry required
  • Ventilation: Bipap; Respiratory Therapy manages vents
  • Support Services:
    • Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts
    • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
    • Pharmacy available 24/7
    • IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years CORE experience in specialty submitted
    • Previous travel experience required for ED, Neuro ICU
    • Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS and ACLS required
    • BSN preferred
    • Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred
  • EMR: Cerner experience required for ED
  • Additional Exams:
    • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
    • Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes)
  • Other:
    • Must have natural hair color (no unnatural colors)
    • No facial piercings allowed
    • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
    • Must pass a day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
    • Must have strong critical thinking and assessment skills, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves
    • Self-releasing velcro seat belts used (not restraints)

Contract Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (facility will not consider contracts shorter than 13 weeks)
  • Orientation: Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
  • Travel Teams: Must have own vehicle
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle to facility; night shift parking in garage
  • Restrictions:
    • Cannot work another assignment/contract simultaneously within this system
    • Must be off CommonSpirit as permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment

Additional Notes

  • This is a teaching hospital; nurses may have nursing students assigned
  • Strong emphasis on sterile technique during SIMs Lab; failure to maintain sterile field may result in termination
  • Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for driving license verification
  • Pre-screening by Medical Solutions; no second interview if clinical recommends
  • Charge nurse role includes no patient assignment but leadership responsibilities

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute care nurses with strong critical thinking skills, who meet trauma and certification requirements, and are comfortable working in a teaching hospital environment with a focus on epilepsy monitoring and neuro critical care.
