Registered Nurse (MedSurg) - Travel/Contract
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital
Position Details
- Specialty: MedSurg Registered Nurse
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Yes, may need to float within scope to like units or sister facilities
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 1 year
- License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, required for all clinical staff
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, required for all RNs
- Equipment Experience: Omnicell, Baxter IV Pumps
- First-time travelers: Accepted
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local Radius: 60 miles
- Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Charting System: Epic
- Parking: Free with pass, available in NE and DT parking lots
Important Notes
- Hurricane Season: June through November; employees may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time. Travelers should avoid confirming new or extended assignments during peak months (August-September) if this is a concern.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
Licensure & Verification
- South Carolina RN license or compact license required
- Primary source verification of license status (active, unencumbered)
- NURSYS verification required
- License hits must be approved by facility
Background Checks
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Must include: SSN Trace, County checks outside SC, SC Statewide, Sex Offender Registry, National Criminal, OFAC, FACIS 3, Employment and Education Verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
Certifications
- BLS and ACLS must be current and not expiring within 30 days of start
- Other certifications (PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke, etc.) as required by unit
- Copies of all certifications must be provided
Health & Immunizations
- Physical exam within 90 days of start, updated annually, confirming ability to work without restrictions
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Respirator medical clearance annually (RespSafety questionnaire)
Facility Specific Documents & Training
- Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules prior to start (approx. 2-6 hours depending on location)
- Clear, passport-style photo for badge
- Completion of facility confidentiality, security, contractor forms, and job description acknowledgment prior to start
- Annual skills checklist and competency exams as applicable
- References: Minimum 2 clinical references, including at least one from the unit of assignment
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers
Additional Notes
- Radiation badge may be required depending on unit (not typical for MedSurg RN)
- Block scheduling and shift accommodations require manager approval and depend on unit needs
- Travelers must upload vaccination and health documentation into the facility’s system as instructed
