Description

Coronary Care ICU (T4) Travel Nurse Opportunity

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: CTICU/CVICU
Unit Size: 24 beds
Hospital Size: 607 beds
Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma
EMR: Cerner


Contract Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (4 total weekend shifts per 4 weeks)
  • Holidays: Worked as part of rotation
  • Float: Required to float to other ICUs, all Telemetry units (4:1 ratio), and Westgate campus if asked. Travelers float before permanent staff.

Unit & Patient Care Information

  • Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:2, with a high number of 1:1 assignments
  • Common Diagnoses/Procedures:
    • Cardiac surgery recovery
    • Impella devices
    • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
    • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
    • Lung transplant
    • Thoracic surgery
    • ECMO
    • Esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy
    • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • High acuity with many bedside procedures: Bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, epidurals
  • Charge Nurse: Yes, no patient assignment
  • Nurse Aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights with high census
  • IV Team: No; strong IV skills required
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
  • Pharmacy: 24/7, including transplant patient support
  • Telemetry Equipment: Phillips monitors

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS required; CCRN preferred
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of core ICU experience in specialty
    • Level 1 Trauma experience required
    • Teaching hospital experience required
    • Previous travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
    • Cath Lab experience not considered for tech/RN teams
  • EMR Experience: Cerner required for ED and ICU

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Orientation: 2 days floor-specific orientation
  • SIMs Lab: Pass/fail on Day 1 for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (except NyICU and ED with modified requirements)
  • Additional Training: Lifts, restraints, wound care education
  • Onboarding Deadline: Complete all onboarding paperwork by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
  • Pass/Fail Exams:
    • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
    • Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
  • Failure of Dysrhythmia Exam: 6-month disqualification within CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento Region

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Appearance: No facial piercings; natural hair colors only; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Travel Teams: Must have own vehicle
  • Work Restrictions: Cannot work two contracts simultaneously within Dignity AZ system
  • Teaching Hospital: Expect nursing students on unit
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle to facility; night shift parking in garage
  • Other: High acuity environment with frequent bedside procedures; travelers with IABP and CABG experience preferred

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses with strong cardiac and critical care skills, who meet the strict clinical and professional requirements of a Level 1 trauma, teaching hospital environment.
