Adult ICU Pods - Phoenix, Arizona
Facility Overview
- Large teaching hospital with 607 beds
- Level 1 Trauma center
- Specialty in lung, liver, and kidney transplants
- Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
- Teaching hospital with nursing students present
Unit Details
- Unit consists of SICU, MICU, and Trauma ICU (TICU)
- 40 beds per unit, 120 beds total
- 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), self-scheduling with scheduler oversight
- Navy scrub color dress code
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Holiday shifts worked in rotation with core staff
- Floating required across all ICU areas and MedSurg/Telemetry units; may float to Westgate campus
SICU
- Patient types: Post-op vented patients, lung/liver/kidney transplant patients, severe back surgeries, Whipple procedures
- Bedside procedures: Bronchoscopy, tracheostomy care, hemodialysis catheter placements
MICU
- Patient types: Sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, RotaProne therapy, heat stroke, overdoses (most intubated with sitter when extubated)
- Bedside procedures: Bronchoscopy, tracheostomy care, hemodialysis catheter placements
TICU
- Patient types: Trauma patients including MVAs, gunshot wounds, closed head injuries, orthopedic trauma
- 12-hour shifts, 4 weekends per 4 weeks, holidays based on unit coverage
Experience & Requirements
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience required
- Must have experience in a 600+ bed teaching hospital
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Previous travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
- Cerner EMR experience required (especially for ED)
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes; ED and NICU have modified requirements)
- Must be competent in sterile field maintenance and common ICU nursing skills
- ACLS, BLS, NIHSS certifications required
- RNs must be able to titrate common drips and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Intensivist coverage 24/7
- Respiratory therapy available 24/7 with advanced ventilator equipment (Cervo I, Jets, Oscillators)
Orientation & Onboarding
- 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation on the floor
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Onboarding paperwork must be complete by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date
- No facial piercings allowed; natural hair colors only; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must not hold concurrent contracts with other facilities in the system
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility; night shift parking in garage
