Job Opportunity: Coronary Care ICU (T4) - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility Overview

  • Location: Phoenix, AZ
  • Hospital Size: 607 beds
  • Specialty: Tertiary care, medical education, and research center
  • Notable Programs: Lung, liver, and kidney transplant; affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (#1 neuro institute)
  • Teaching hospital with nursing students present

Unit Details

  • Unit: CTICU/CVICU
  • Beds: 24
  • Patient Ratios: 1:1 to 1:2 (high number of 1:1 assignments)
  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm)
  • Weekend Requirement: 3-4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Holidays: Worked as part of rotation/unit coverage
  • Float Requirements: Float to other ICUs and telemetry units (tele ratio 4:1); float to Westgate campus if requested
  • Charge Nurse Role: Yes, no patient assignment
  • Nurse Aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights with high census
  • Scrub Color: Navy
  • Telemetry Equipment: Phillips
  • In-House Coverage: Intensivist on during day, on-call at night
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
  • Pharmacy: 24/7, with transplant patient expertise utilized

Patient Population and Care

  • Common Diagnoses: Cardiac surgery recovery, Impella, IABP, CRRT, lung transplant, thoracic surgery, ECMO, esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, TAVR
  • High acuity with many bedside procedures (bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheters, epidurals)
  • Experience with IABP and CABG patients preferred

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Specialty: Coronary Care ICU (T4)
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years of core ICU experience in specialty; Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience required
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS required; CCRN preferred
  • EMR: Cerner experience required
  • Dysrhythmia Exam: Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; maximum 2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region
  • Orientation: Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding: Complete by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files delay start
  • SIMs Lab: Pass/fail on Day 1 for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions for some units); sterile field competency required
  • Additional Training: Lifts, restraints, wound care education provided
  • Vehicle: Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Appearance: No facial piercings, natural hair colors only; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Contract Length: Minimum 13 weeks (interpreted as weeks)
  • Other: Cannot hold concurrent contracts; must have been off permanent staff at this facility system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment

Work Environment & Policies

  • Parking: Assigned parking lot with shuttle to facility; night shift assigned to parking garage
  • No local rates allowed within 50-mile radius
  • High expectations for sterile technique and clinical competency
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs lab and dysrhythmia exam to continue

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses with strong cardiac and critical care skills, who meet trauma and teaching hospital experience requirements, and are comfortable with high-acuity patients and frequent bedside procedures.
