ER Nurse Travel Opportunity - California (Bakersfield)

Position Overview

  • Seeking an experienced ER nurse for a travel contract.
  • Must have at least 3 full years of ER nursing experience.
  • Candidates must have prior travel nursing experience (no first-time travelers).
  • Required certifications: Active BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, and California RN License.
  • Must be willing and able to float to Pediatric ER as needed.
  • Flexible scheduling required; no block scheduling.
  • Every other weekend and 2 out of every 3 holidays required.

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Unit Details

  • Adult ER: 18 beds + 10 reclining chairs (moderate care)
  • Pediatric ER: 5 beds + 5 reclining chairs
  • Approximately 325 patient visits per day combined (50% pediatric patients)
  • Pediatric ER is a receiving center for pediatric emergencies.
  • Adult ER is a STEMI, CVA (stroke), and burn receiving center.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:2
    • Pediatric ER: 1:4
    • Adult ER: 1:4
    • Procedural sedation: 1:1
  • Use of ER techs or CNAs; LVNs run fast track area.
  • Midlevel providers run fast track from 11am-11pm; designated pediatric doctor on site during these hours.
  • Phillips monitors and monitor tech available.

Job Requirements & Skills

  • Must pass a basic EKG interpretation test during orientation.
  • Critical care RNs (ED/ICU/PICU) will have additional testing (STEMI curriculum, Procedural Sedation).
  • Experience with a wide range of diagnoses: minor walk-ins to critically ill patients including respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, stroke alerts, and occasional psychiatric holds.
  • Significant pediatric ER experience required for those working in Peds ER (not just general nursing experience).
  • Must be team-oriented, professional, and respectful to all team members including EMS.
  • Uniform colors: Navy blue for RNs, cranberry for LVNs.

Additional Notes

  • No travel teams or duos accepted.
  • Pediatric ER preferred certifications: BLS, ALS, PALS, ENPC or CPEN.
  • Shift example: Mid shifts 3pm-3:30am, every other weekend.
  • Orientation includes meeting with ER educator to complete required education.

This role is ideal for ER nurses with strong pediatric and adult ER experience who are comfortable with a fast-paced, diverse patient population and flexible scheduling.
