Adult ICU Pods - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility Overview

  • Large teaching hospital with 607 beds
  • Level 1 Trauma center
  • Nationally recognized tertiary care, medical education, and research center
  • Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
  • Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
  • Teaching hospital environment; travelers may have nursing students

Contract Details

  • Contract length: 13 weeks minimum (no contracts shorter than 13 weeks accepted)
  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
  • Must be off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
  • No concurrent contracts allowed with Dignity AZ
  • Onboarding paperwork deadline: Wednesday 1pm CST before start date (strict, no exceptions)
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Parking provided with shuttle to facility (night shift parking in garage)
  • 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks required
  • Holiday shifts worked in rotation with core staff
  • 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), self-scheduling allowed with scheduler oversight

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years ICU experience in a 600+ bed teaching hospital
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Previous travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
  • Cerner EMR experience required (especially for ED)
  • ACLS, BLS, NIHSS certifications required
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in AZ and Sacramento region)
  • Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care)
  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing

Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Unit consists of SICU, MICU, and Trauma ICU (40 beds per unit, 120 beds total)
  • ICU travelers float among all ICU areas and may float to MedSurg/Telemetry units or St. Joseph Westgate campus
  • RNs required to read and interpret their own cardiac strips
  • Common titratable and set-rate drips administered by RNs
  • Intensivist coverage 24/7
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7
  • Ventilator equipment includes Cervo I, Jets, Oscillators

MICU

  • Common diagnoses: Sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, RotaProne therapy, heat stroke, overdoses (most intubated)
  • Bedside procedures: Bronchoscopy, tracheostomy care, hemodialysis catheter placements

SICU

  • Common diagnoses: Post-op vented patients, lung/liver/kidney transplants, severe back surgeries, Whipple procedures
  • Bedside procedures: Bronchoscopy, tracheostomy care, hemodialysis catheter placements

TICU (Trauma ICU)

  • Common diagnoses: Trauma patients including MVAs, gunshot wounds, closed head injuries, orthopedic trauma
  • 12-hour day shifts, 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks, holiday coverage based on unit needs

Orientation & Onboarding

  • 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation on the floor
  • Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab focusing on sterile technique and critical nursing skills
  • Strict adherence to sterile field expected; failure in SIMs Lab may result in termination
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care policies

Note: Candidates must meet all clinical and compliance requirements prior to start. This is a high-acuity, fast-paced ICU environment requiring strong critical care skills and adaptability.
