ER RN Travel Job - Phoenix, Arizona

Job Details

  • Specialty: ER RN
  • Location: Phoenix, AZ
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum contract length)
  • Unit: Emergency Department / Trauma
  • Unit Size: Acute - 36 beds, Subacute - 54 beds, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
  • Hospital Type: Level 1 Trauma Center, Teaching Hospital
  • EMR System: Cerner (required)
  • Patient Ratios: 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Shift Requirements:
    • 12-hour night shifts
    • 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks (unit discretion)
  • Float Policy: Can float between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes (main campus, Westgate, and 2 Free Standing ERs)
  • Typical Patient Population: Trauma, burns, pediatric patients transferred out, CP center, spinal cord injuries, approx. 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 patients per year
  • Common Diagnoses: Trauma, burns, psych holds (30-40), spinal cord injuries

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years of core ER experience required
  • Trauma Experience: Must have at least 1 year of Level 1 Trauma experience (8 months+ will be screened but 1 year preferred)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Previous travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • PALS (ENPC not accepted as a replacement for PALS)
  • Preferred Certifications: TNCC and ATCN
  • Additional Exams:
    • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
    • Day 1 Pass/Fail Exam during orientation (study guide provided)
  • SIMs Lab: Pass/fail skills lab on Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (varies by unit). Competency in sterile technique required.

Other Requirements & Notes

  • Appearance: No facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit test
  • Vehicle: Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Orientation: Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding: Complete all onboarding by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date; incomplete files will delay start
  • Float: Floating within ER only
  • Charge Nurses: 2 charge RNs with light patient loads or task assignments
  • Support Staff: 4 patient care technicians (sitters)
  • Technology: Phillips telemetry monitors (ability to read strips required)
  • Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 RT coverage; vents managed by RT
  • Pharmacy: Pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
  • Medical Staff: Minimum 2 MDs in-house (hospitalists or intensivists), midlevels and anesthesia available
  • Additional Training: Lifts, restraints, wound care education provided (equipment/policies vary by facility)

This position is ideal for ER nurses with solid trauma experience, prior travel assignments, and strong clinical skills in a Level 1 trauma teaching hospital environment.
