Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Neuro ICU Registered Nurse for a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital with a 32-bed Neuro ICU unit. This role requires strong neuro assessment skills, experience with intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, and the ability to float between ICU and Telemetry units.
Unit Details
- Unit: Neuro ICU (32 beds)
- Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Floating: Required to float between all ICU floors and Telemetry units; Telemetry patient load 4:1 when floated
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
- Monitoring: Phillips monitors
- Ventilator patients: Yes
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
- Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage
- Charge Nurse: Yes (does not take patients)
- Holidays: Work into core staff rotation
- Scrub Color: Any non-offensive color or print; steel grey preferred for Neuro floors
Patient Population
- Critical care patients with neurological diagnoses
- Procedures include craniotomies, brain tumor removals and ablations, brain biopsies, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license appropriate for Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Neuro ICU experience: Minimum 18 months preferred (will consider less than 2 years if 18 months Neuro ICU)
- Prior travel experience: 3-6 months travel experience required in Neuro ICU or ED
- ACLS and BLS certification required
- Experience with External Ventricular Drain (EVD) required
- Cerner EMR experience required
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- Strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience required
- SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Must comply with facility appearance policies: natural hair color only, no facial piercings, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
- Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with this employer
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- Facility is a teaching hospital; nursing students may be present
- Must be gone from permanent staff role at this health system for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel candidates
- Floating includes ICU and Telemetry units with a 4:1 patient load on Telemetry floors
- 4 total weekend shifts per 4-week period; holiday shifts based on unit coverage
This position is ideal for a Neuro ICU nurse with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and prior travel contract experience looking for a 13-week assignment in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
