Registered Nurse (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum contract length)
Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
Unit Size: 48 beds total (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), days and nights
Patient Ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts in a 4-week period, self-scheduling
Holiday Requirement: Work included in holiday rotation
Charge Nurse: Yes, with no patient assignment
Nurse Aides: 1-2 PCTs on days, 1 at night
Floating: Possible to Med Surg/Telemetry floors
Job Description
- Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurological diagnoses.
- Manage 24-48 hour trend EEG monitoring.
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required to detect subtle patient changes.
- MedSurg/Telemetry RN with strong skills will be trained to assess cranial nerves.
- Use of self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints).
- Ventilator support includes BiPAP; Respiratory Therapist available 24/7.
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts.
- IV team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks.
- Pharmacy available 24/7.
- Orientation includes 2 shifts on the floor.
- Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab required (skills include Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes; exceptions apply for some units).
- Pass/fail dysrhythmia exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (maximum 2 attempts).
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays).
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed.
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
- Travel teams must have their own vehicles.
- Parking assigned with shuttle service to the facility.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of Telemetry experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Emergency Department (ED) experience
- Neuro ICU experience
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Additional Notes
- This is a teaching hospital; nurses may be expected to work with nursing students.
- Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with this employer.
- Must have been off permanent staff at this employer for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment.
- Strong emphasis on sterile technique and competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes.
- The unit primarily functions as a MedSurg/Telemetry unit with some Telemetry required.
- Weekend and holiday shifts are part of the schedule.
- Nurses should be prepared for a fast-paced, high-acuity neurological patient population.
