Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Durham, North Carolina


Position Details

  • Job Title: Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse
  • Location: Durham, North Carolina
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Targeted Start Dates: May 18, June 1, or June 15
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Orientation: Bi-weekly sessions

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown experience
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Must be completed within 90 days of start date
    • Includes SSN trace, county searches for past 7 years, alias, nationwide, sex offender, international (if applicable), education verification (as required)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 90 days
  • Drug Testing:
    • Negative 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start
    • Instant tests not accepted
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 12 months of start (latex allergy acceptable)
    • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or T-Spot) within 12 months or clear chest x-ray if history of positive TB
    • Required immunizations/vaccines with no exemptions allowed:
      • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
      • Measles (2 vaccines or positive titer)
      • Mumps (2 vaccines or positive titer)
      • Rubella (1 vaccine or positive titer)
      • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
      • Polio vaccine or signed attestation
      • Seasonal flu vaccine (required annually during flu season; no exemptions)
    • Fit mask (N95 or equivalent) if applicable (not specifically required for RN but noted for radiology/cardiology specialties)
  • References: Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months, at least one must be a supervisor
  • Employment Application: Required with 7 years of work history
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually

Additional Requirements

  • Duke Guest Account: Must be set up prior to clearance to access orientation and work systems
  • Competency Exam: Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Pass/Fail Testing: EKG/medication testing administered at orientation (passing score 80%)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) Blue Card: May be required depending on unit; training provided onsite if not held
  • Acknowledgement of Pass/Fail Testing: Required for RNs
  • Facility-Specific Onboarding:
    • Completion of competency checklists within 3 weeks after start
    • Completion of online modules prior to orientation
    • First Day Instructions (FDI) provided before orientation week

  • Candidates cannot start with pending background checks.
  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file.
  • Local candidates within 75 miles receive a different rate (not included here).
  • Candidate must be prepared for weekend shifts every other weekend.
