Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Night PCU
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Beds: 40 beds (average daily census ~24)
- Patient Types: Adults with cardiac medical/surgical needs, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post-stent, post-pacemaker placement, renal failure
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (day and night)
- Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Ratio: 1:12
- Charge Nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
- RNs required to titrate drips (Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, insulin)
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP
- Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Competency in Arterial Lines required
- Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
- Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Must be flexible, adaptable, team-oriented, and have strong communication skills
- Experience working with diverse cultural populations, primarily Hispanic and Somalian
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 1 day of unit-specific orientation
- Shifts: 0630-1830 or 1830-0630 (nights)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
- Call-back policy: If called back to work, must arrive within 30 minutes
- Blocked scheduling generally not approved except for weekends only
- No duo placements or shared care schedules approved
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: Navy Blue
Additional Information
- Equipment available: Overhead lifts in half the rooms, portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanner
- Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, medication communication, and hospital environment
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved after submission
Note: Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems within the 50-mile radius.
