Registered Nurse (Med Surg/Peds) - North Dakota
Job Details
- Location: Dickinson, North Dakota
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Day/Night rotation
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- Unit Size: 17 beds (14 inpatient, 3 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4
- Nights: 1:5
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling available
- Weekend Requirement: As needed
- Holiday Requirement: None
- Floating: May float to ED/ICU for 1:1 assignments as needed
- Orientation: 1 unit-specific orientation shift (12 hours), or one night and one day if needed
- Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs
Patient Population & Care
- Adults and pediatric patients
- Common diagnoses: UTI, altered mental status, pneumonia, COPD
- Pediatrician on call (not in-house); pediatric patients not managed by hospitalists
- Respiratory therapy equipment present (BiPAP occasionally); RNs troubleshoot but do not manage vents
- Telemetry monitors used; Med Surg/Peds nurses apply telemetry leads but do not interpret strips (ICU monitors telemetry and reads strips)
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit:
- Day shift: 2 aides per 15 patients
- Night shift: 1 aide
Clinical Responsibilities
- No clinical involvement beyond nursing scope (e.g., no ventilator management)
- RNs do not titrate drips
- Common IV infusions: electrolytes, hypertensive medications, diuretics (rarely continuous infusion)
- Do not titrate hypertensive or hypotensive medications
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current RN license appropriate for North Dakota
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification required
- Prior travel experience: Not specified as required
Additional Information
- Fit testing required; facial hair may disqualify due to inability to pass fit test or use PAPR
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related healthcare system facilities
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
- Successful nurses on this unit are communicative, motivated, approachable, team-oriented, and proactive in asking questions
- Documentation can be challenging; attention to detail is important
This position is ideal for RNs with Med Surg and Pediatric experience seeking a 13-week contract with day/night rotation in a small hospital setting.
