Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Obstetrics)

Location: Grass Valley, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center. The unit includes Labor & Delivery (4 beds) and Mother-Baby (8 beds). Approximately 45 deliveries per month, including term, preterm, and couplets. Transfers for high-risk mothers (34 weeks and below) are made to other facilities. Newborns may require IV antibiotics or short-term oxygen. General gynecology patients are also cared for on the unit.

Work Schedule & Environment

• Shift: Nights (18:45 – 07:15)
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights; Saturday and Sunday days)
• Holiday Requirement: Rotate working 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s) with core staff; holiday time off considered but not guaranteed
• Staffing Ratios:

  • Labor & Delivery: 1:2 ratio, 1:1 during active delivery
  • Mother-Baby: 1:4 couplets
• Charge Nurse Role: Yes, generally does not take patients but provides break relief
• Floating: No; responsible only for Labor & Delivery or Mother-Baby
• Orientation: 2–3 days floor-specific orientation with a preceptor
• EMR System: Cerner
• Report: Bedside report
• Scheduling: Posted 6 weeks in advance; no self-scheduling; travelers can make themselves available for extra shifts and trade shifts with staff
• Scrub Color: Provided
• Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7
• Pharmacy: Available 06:30–22:00 with on-call pharmacist after hours; remote pharmacy support for deliveries
• Hospitalist/Intensivist: In-house during the day; OB and anesthesia on-call at night
• Resources: Limited resources at night; must be strong in emergencies and able to work independently

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience
• Active California RN license
• Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • STABLE certification
  • Advanced AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) including Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)
• Two supervisory references required (one within the last 12 months, one within the last 3 years; charge nurse experience accepted)

Additional Information

• No nurse aides on the unit
• No ventilators or telemetry on the unit
• Common diagnoses: standard Labor & Delivery cases, term and preterm infants, couplets, general gynecology
• Emergency preparedness and independent decision-making skills are essential
• Orientation for the facility system-wide is held in Sacramento, not on-site in Grass Valley
