Unit Details
- Department: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
- Number of beds: 18
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1
- Patient population: Open heart, complex thoracic and vascular surgery patients; includes patients supported by Impella, IABP, CRRT, and ECMO
- Common cases: Advanced cardiac surgeries, lytic cases, carotids, TCARS, Fempop, EVARs/Endo AAAs, complex cases from cath lab, structural heart program, EP lab, ER, and clinic
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience with CVICU patient population
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Must be able to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry/monitor strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
- Troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment (ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow, etc.)
- No CNAs on unit; RNs provide all direct patient care
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignment
- Hospitalists and intensivists are in-house 24/7
Orientation & Evaluation
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- Pass/fail RN exam during orientation (open book, 90% required to pass)
Scheduling & Shifts
- Shift hours: 06:30-18:30 and 18:30-06:30 (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday or as needed
- Floating: Required to float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must have a valid driver’s license at time of submission (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
- Radius rule: Candidate must live within 50 miles and may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI or Dignity
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
This position is ideal for experienced CVICU RNs comfortable with complex cardiac patients, advanced monitoring, and critical care interventions in a high-acuity environment.
